A Dollar a Word

After Rudyard Kipling won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907, a newspaper correspondent reported that Kipling was earning one dollar a word. When a fan read about it, he sent the the following letter to Kipling:

“I see you get a dollar a word for your writing. I enclose a check for one dollar. Please send me a sample.”

Kipling sent a postcard to the man that read: “Thanks”.
